After the Verdict
Given circumstances
- Character
- Defendant
- Setting
- A courthouse stairwell, fluorescent lights, everyone else has left.
- The moment before
- They told you to look relieved for the press outside. You can't.
- Scene partner
- Your lawyer, briefcase already closed, checking their watch
Direction
Winning was supposed to feel different. You're speaking to the only person who knows what actually happened, and that knowledge is a third person in the room.
Script
Not guilty isn't the same thing as innocent. You know that, right?
(listening)
No, it was exactly what we wanted. You were perfect. The jury was perfect. It all went perfectly.
(beat)
I just need you to say it. One time, not for a judge, not for a strategy. Did you believe me when I said I didn't do it?
(they look away)
Right. So when I walk out there, I know what my lawyer thinks of me. That's all I wanted to clarify.
