The Prescription

Given circumstances

Character
Pharmacist
Setting
Behind the counter, line of people waiting, fluorescent hum overhead
The moment before
You told them their insurance denied it. They said they'd pay cash. You told them the cash price.
Scene partner
A patient on the other side of the plexiglass, holding a paper script

Direction

Clinical until it isn't. You're not allowed to have opinions about this, which is exactly why you do.

Script

(beat)

I don't set the price. I just fill it. If you want to talk to your doctor about alternatives, I can call over there and—

(they're getting loud)

Okay. Listen to me. I'm going to check something.

(you turn to the computer, then back)

There's a coupon I can run. It's not much. Brings it down to eighty. I'm not supposed to offer it unless you ask, but I'm offering. Do you want me to run it or not?
